I’m assuming that you don’t need an in-depth explanation into what Hoodia is but just for the
sake of completeness I’ll have you indulge in my lecture. The Hoodia variety that is of interest to us is Hoodia Gordonii which is reported to
have appetite suppressant qualities. It’s been know and used by the African Bushmen for many centuries to control their hunger and thirst while
hunting. Hoodia Gordonii is amongst hundreds of different kinds of Hoodia but is the only variety that has the appetite suppressant properties.
The developed world only got wind about the properties of Hoodia circa 2003 and ever since there has been huge interest in the plant.
The very first thing that you must understand is that Extracts are very different to genuine
Hoodia Gordonii. An extract is basically a refining process which effectively extracts (thus the name) the active ingredients of the Hoodia
Gordonii plant stem. This often means that all the rest of the plant is either disposed of or used to make other products.
I think a history lesson in the extraction process of Hoodia is required. In the 1970s a
pharmaceutical called applied and received a patent to “synthesize” the P57 molecule in Hoodia Gordonii. Small budget research was conducted all
the way until 1996 when Pfizer jumped on-board. The first steps in synthesizing are to actually extract the P57 molecules then making synthetic
copies of it. Reports suggested that the synthesizing was not successful and that Pfizer left the partnership in 2003. Reports didn’t mention if
the problem was in the actual extraction of the P57 molecule or the copying of it, but either way the process didn’t make economic sense for the
Pfizer to continue its on-going research.
It is based on this history that we can see that extracting the active P57 ingredient is either
extremely hard to do or prohibitively expensive compared to just using the real plant stem instead. Thus, if you do decide that you are
interested in buying the Hoodia Extracts, you will either have to pay an unnecessarily high price for what is essentially the same thing as real
Hoodia or that the company or person selling you the extract isn’t being totally truthful with you.
As a potential consumer you must be aware that there are a few websites that supposedly sell
Hoodia Extracts which are 200% - 400% stronger than genuine Hoodia Gordonii stem. This is almost all lies. It is possible but highly unlikely as
the price alone for these extracts would be at least $200+ for 30 pills. I recommend that if you are in the market for buying Hoodia, simple
stick to the original Hoodia Gordonii stem sold by an agent with a South African Export Certificate. This is the easiest way to ensure that you
get what you are promised.
